Agriculture does more than put food on the table. Across Nigeria, it creates jobs, strengthens rural economies, and gives millions of smallholder farmers the opportunity to build better futures for themselves and their families. At Babban Gona, we see this every day in the communities we work with across northern Nigeria, where farming, done right, becomes the foundation for something much bigger than a single harvest.
Strengthening Food Security
Northern Nigeria is one of the country’s most important farming regions, but for too long, smallholder farmers here have lacked the inputs, financing, and training to reach their full potential. Through our Trust Group model, members get access to quality seeds, affordable credit, and hands-on agronomic training, support that has helped farmers significantly increase their yields and incomes. We are also building for a changing climate, helping farmers adopt practices that protect their land and keep them producing even as conditions shift. Higher, more reliable yields do not just improve household incomes; they strengthen the food supply for entire communities.
Creating Opportunities for Women and Youth
Agriculture is opening new doors for women and young people across our network. We support women to run profitable farms and build the skills to provide for their families through training and access to finance, inputs, and markets.Young Nigerians are also finding a real career path here. Through our Agricultural Franchise model, top-performing farmers can graduate into running their own micro-enterprises, supplying inputs and capital to farmers in their communities, and bringing fresh energy to the sector.
Building Stronger Communities
When farmers succeed, entire communities benefit. Our Trust Groups, small cooperatives of 3 to 5 farmers, each led by a trained Trust Group Leader, turn individual farmers into a support network built on shared accountability and shared knowledge.
As franchise micro-enterprises grow, we help connect them to financing from local banks, embedding farmers permanently into Nigeria’s financial system and creating ripple effects of local jobs and economic activity well beyond the farm gate.
A More Prosperous Future Through Agriculture
Agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s greatest opportunities for driving inclusive growth and sustainable development. At Babban Gona, we believe that investing in farmers is an investment in stronger communities, a more resilient food system, and a more prosperous Nigeria. Every thriving farmer represents another step toward a future where agriculture continues to transform lives at scale.
